Basic Strategies of Website SEO Used By SEO Consultants

Most people use search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN to find products and information online. It is a fact that 80% of people searching will find what they want in the first page of the search result. With that in mind, we can say that it is vital that your webpage is on the first page of the list.

Following are the basic strategies that you can follow to achieve high rankings in the search engines:

Keyword Research:

Most essential starting point for Search Engine Optimization is keyword research. There are a lot of tools that you can use to help you with keyword research. These tools keep track of the number of times words are searched every month and will give you list of related words and phrases that you can use for research. You can see how competitive these keywords are and you should be realistic and mindful in choosing one if you would like to be ranked for it. Make use of long-tailed key phrases as it will yield quick results for your business. Do put keywords in your title tags, at the beginning of your Meta tags and descriptions, in your H1 tags and at the beginning of your paragraphs. Avoid keyword stuffing as it will lead to a penalized site.

Quality Content:

Make sure you have a well-written content because it is essential to have quality articles. Relevant links should be used and web pages should be focused as much as possible. Use relevant topics and pages; do not get side-tracked. If your business is all about furniture making, do not add a page for candle making. If you create more content, do your keyword research and add those in your page URLs.

Get Index In Search Engines:

It is critical to get as many of your web pages indexed as possible. Make sure to use keywords in your web pages that link to your most important pages as it will give you more backlinks. Consider links as votes that mean the more votes you have the more popular you are in the eyes of Google.

Site Structure:

Your website needs to be properly structured because this is what search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo want to see. Also, you can set up a Google webmaster tool account, submit your site and create a sitemap. That way search engine spiders can better crawl your site.

Since most are now engaging SEO as part of their long term marketing strategy then these steps would definitely help online marketers and business owners increase traffic to their website and keep up with the competitive market.

Search Engine Optimization Tips – Heading Tags and Why They Are Important Website SEO Elements

Search engine optimization for your website is critical if you want to see any type of success online. When you create a website, obviously the main goal is to get traffic or you are just wasting your time and money. Getting traffic does not happen through luck; there are some key pieces that must be present on your website that will allow the search engines to understand what your site is about and appropriately place you in the search engines.
The use of heading tags (h1, h2, h3, h4, h5) sends the message to the search engines of what your site is really all about. This is one way you can control how they interpret what is presented to them. Now, it goes without saying that the rest of the content of your site must support the context of your heading tags. You can not get away with placing unrelated words in your headings and then go off on a totally different topic in the content body of the page. This would do you no good whatsoever.
To use heading tags, the h1 is for the main keyword title of the page with the subsequent h2-h5 being lower in priority. You can very effectively communicate with the search engines by giving them clues as to which keyword phrases you would like to be ranked for and which are the most important to you. Every h-tag you use, should be keyword rich with your target phrase appearing as close to the first words as possible.
The first 3-4 words hold the most weight so do be sure to lead with the main phrase in your headings.
A good example of a tag would be : Heading tags – Why you should use them.
A bad example would be : Why you should use heading tags.
You should use related keyword phrases for the lower priority tags. h1 being the highest and reserved for your most important keywords and h5 the lowest.
By using on page SEO techniques, it is very easy to communicate with the search engines and get the desired results. It is only when you leave all of the key factors out that your website will not perform as you expect. There is no luck involved with getting traffic. It is only a matter of making sure you use every advantage possible and do the work involved with getting to the coveted page one placement.
Search engine optimization simply means talking to the search engines through the elements on your website. The more you talk, the more they listen.

Improving Your Conversion Rates Is Not Just About Increasing Your Traffic

There is a big misconception that you must have massive amounts of traffic to your website in order to improve the conversion rate of your web pages. While a decent amount of website visitors is necessary to make sales, it is the quality of that traffic that makes all the difference. It is actually quite easy to improve the number of buyers that come to your site.
Just getting people through the doors of your business does not guarantee you will make sales. You must make sure that the visitors are potential customers and not just “tire kickers and time wasters”. People just looking for general information on a subject are not typically buyers. The volume of unique visitors and interaction on your site may offer a slight benefit to your search engine placement but they will not put money in your pocket. In fact, tire kickers tend to cost money by using up your resources.

How do you eliminate the time wasters and increase sales?

The number one way to focus on buying traffic is by narrowing the keywords you use to draw people to your site. Here is an example: Let’s say your business is a cupcake store. You bake lovely cupcakes for birthdays, weddings, etc. Now let’s also assume that you are working hard to get traffic to your website in order to process more orders. You are building back links, doing social marketing, etc. You may well even be paying for someone to promote your site for you or even worse, paying for this traffic through pay per click advertising. All with the goal of getting more and more people looking for the keyword “cupcakes” to come to your site.
Unfortunately, probably 99% of those people coming to your site will most likely be looking for cupcake recipes and not looking to purchase any products from you. In this case, you are spending a great deal of resources, either your time or your money, on driving the wrong kind of traffic to your website.
Instead, you should focus all of your resources on promoting buyer keywords such as cupcake bakery, cupcake shop, buy cupcakes online, etc.  This will ensure that every visitor that comes to your website will already be shopping and are just looking for the right products or merchant to spend their money on.
Yes, you will likely see a drastic drop in the volume of traffic your site gets by doing this, but isn’t your time and money better spent on bringing traffic to your site that already has their credit card in hand going to give you a better return on investment? Your conversion rates will dramatically increase and you will not need as many visitors to your site in order to turn a decent profit.

Website SEO – Heading Tags – What They Are And How To Use Them

When it comes to on page SEO for your website, heading tags are a must. Many people, though, are confused about what they are and how they should be used. When you are creating visitor friendly content, the use of heading tags will remove the need to stuff your content with your keywords making it a much more pleasurable experience for your readers.

What are heading tags?

Heading tags are bits of HTML code that are intended to both communicate to the search engines and to help you organize your thoughts and content. They follow a hierarchy from h1, which is the top level, on down to h6, which is the lowest. These tags are placed around text like so in the HTML of your page:
<h1>Your title text here</h1>
By default, most browsers will display this text in a very large bold text unless you have indicated differently within the design of your website or blog. The h2, h3, h4, h5, and h6 tags will display smaller and smaller and smaller, etc.

Why do you use heading tags on your web pages?

There are three main reasons to use heading tags on your web pages.
  1. They convey to the search engines what your page content is about. When a search robot or spider crawls your website it looks for some key factors to give them an indication of what information is available on that particular page. One thing they particularly look for is the headings and the priority of the content. So your h1 text is given the top priority and each subsequent heading is listed in the hierarchy before the bot goes on to classify your content.
  2. They help your visitors find what they are looking for. Most internet users today are in a hurry to find what they are searching for. They tend to be page scanners. Meaning they will surf to your site and quickly scan through to see if you have what they want. Because the text of a heading tag is larger and bolder than the rest of the page, they can quickly see at a glance if the page covers the topic they are looking for and then decide to stay longer and read on for more details.
  3. They help you organize your page content. When you are creating text for your site, chances are you have come up with some bullet points before you sit down to write. If you create your headings ahead of time, you will stay focused and to the point and your pages will flow better.

How to use heading tags.

When you are creating your web page, you always want to include your keywords in your heading tags. Your main keywords should appear in the headings. The h1 should be used only for the main headline or title of the page. You may not, and most likely should not, use all 6 heading tags within one page of content unless it is a very, very long page of content. Headings 1-4 are the most commonly used.
Your h2, h3 and h4 tags will be used as sub-titles. Each heading should categorize a new point to support your main headline. Don’t just throw these tags in willy nilly. They should have a purpose and introduce a new thought.
When you use keyword rich heading tags, there is absolutely no need to stuff keywords into the content and you can focus on writing high quality material that your readers will appreciate. A good website will always have the visitor as the main focus of all content they create. You should only be communicating with the search engines through your code and not force feeding it to your readers.

Free Traffic vs Paid Traffic – Which Will Help Your Business The Most?

When you are just starting to promote your website online you are faced with the task of getting traffic to your website. There are two means to do this; free traffic, also known as organic traffic, or paid for traffic through paid advertising campaigns.
Both of these methods of site promotion are effective, but the comparison is similar to that of comparing long term traffic strategies to short term traffic strategies. I will list the advantages and disadvantages of both for you to fully understand the role that each marketing technique can play in generating visitors to your business website.

Paid Traffic Through Advertising

  • This method of site promotion can give you the fastest results in bringing visitors to your site almost immediately. You can set up your website and have traffic coming to the site instantly as soon as your advertising campaign is live.
  • The traffic only lasts as long as you are paying for the advertising. If you end the sales campaign, your traffic will disappear.
  • When using PPC ads (pay per click), it takes a great deal of trial and error to split test and refine your ad copy and keywords to find out which ones will give you a return on investment and which ones won’t. There will be very little ROI, in fact you will likely see a loss for the first while, until you have perfected your campaign.
  • You must diligently monitor the results daily to avoid receiving a very high advertising bill each month. Failure to keep on top of the numbers has meant a big debt to some new businesses who lacked the knowledge and experience to fully understand how paid advertising works.
  • Whether you are using PPC, banner ads or solo ads, there is a cost involved and you must have that cost included in your monthly spending budget.
  • If your efforts are successful, you may not be able to control your business growth and may find yourself facing supply issues that you were not anticipating. The potential for unhappy customers and customer service issues is much higher.

Free Traffic From Organic SEO

  • Obviously the first advantage that comes to mind is that this strategy is free.
  • Since this method uses your website as it’s main focus, rather than an ad, and all traffic strategies are permanent fixtures on the internet, the results are long term in nature.
  • Because this traffic technique involves search engine optimization, social media marketing, email marketing and article marketing it is very effective in creating relationships with existing and potential customers, building your brand and achieving authority status within your market.
  • There are SEO experts available to advise you on building your traffic strategy and help you implement it.
  • Your business will be able to grow naturally allowing you to keep up with demand and provide better customer service.
  • Because this is a long term marketing strategy, the results are not immediate but build gradually over time.
  • There is a considerable amount of time needed to be invested to establish your website firmly in the internet as a key player in your market.
  • You will need to either invest your time learn and implement the SEO strategies, outsource the work or hire staff to handle the tasks involved.
As with any marketing plan, online or offline, there is a cost involved with promoting your business. A good traffic generation plan will focus mainly on the long term strategies as they offer your business the most benefits at the end of the day.
In my opinion, the long term strategies should be used for businesses that plan to be around for the long term and the short term ads should be used to promote short term sales and discounts or business announcements similar to how you would use newspaper flyers.

What Are Keywords? – SEO FAQ

Keywords are words that tell the search engines what your website is about. They are the same words that surfers type in the search engine query to find what they are looking for. The trick is to find the best phrase that gets a good number of searches every month but has a small amount of competition so you are more likely to appear higher up in the search engine results.
Finding the right keywords for your website is probably one of the most important aspects of planning your website and online business. Getting it right can mean a great deal of traffic to your site. Get it wrong and your online business will most likely fail.
Keyword research is a very large topic and I am not going to go into all of the training in this article. I will go into more detail in later articles and in my website. For this article I will go into explaining the differences between the various types of keywords.

Keywords, keyword phrases and long tail keywords:

For this demonstration, I will use the topic of Cars as an example. A single word covering a very broad topic is called a keyword or seed keyword. For this topic, the seed would be “cars”.
“Hybrid cars” or “best hybrid cars” would be keyword phrases. These are typically 2-3 word phrases that get more specific within your niche. “Find the best hybrid cars” or “review of the best hybrid cars” would be long tail keywords. These tend to be longer phrases with more focused attention on finding specific information.

Main keyword phrases and LSI keywords:

When you research your market, you will decide on one main keyword phrase or longtail phrase that you will plan your site content around. This is the phrase you will use for anchor text links and any marketing or promotion for your website.
You will also have LSI (latent semantic indexing) or related keywords. LSI keywords are words that the search engines expect to be associated with your main topic.  Let’s say you are using “best hybrid cars” as your main keyword phrase. Some LSI words that the search engines may expect to be associated with the subject might be “low gas mileage” , “electric cars”,  “Toyota Prius”, etc. You should think of these words as supporting words that give your main keyword more meaning. By optimizing your website for the main keyword and then supporting it with a smattering of LSIs, the search engines will not have any trouble identifying that your website is indeed about your main keyword.

Press Releases For Traffic- Have You Submitted One Lately?

Press Releases are the easiest and one of the most effective ways to drive traffic to your website, establish credibility within your niche and build your brand. Whether you are in a competitive market or not, you can easily achieve first page search status by submitting a news announcement about your business or niche.
The main reason that these are so effective is because Google places a “news” section on the first page of their search results. Where do they get their news? From press release sites. So even if you are competing with millions of other pages for the normal organic search, you can get a major leg up on the competition by submitting an announcement.
Yes, your announcement may only stay on the first page for a few hours if others within your market are also actively submitting to the press, but you can achieve a great deal of sales in a few hours. Once you have been bounced off the front page news, you simply submit another release to get back in that spot again.
This is very powerful stuff. If you put a little effort into creating and submitting just one press release per day, you could spend the majority of your time on page one. Do you think that would be helpful to your business? I think so.
Another advantage is that many people interested in your market will subscribe to the news on press sites or on Google News. That means that by using this method, you have the ability to be placed in the inboxes and RSS feeds of many of your potential customers.
Not only will you realize more revenue, you will quickly establish credibility within your niche. This is particularly important if you are trying to establish your brand for your business or product.
If you are just getting started and your budget is tight, I suggest submitting to the various free press release sites available. I also suggest at least once per month, if you can afford it, to submit to a premium site. The premium sites tend to offer better services and there are also services out there that will, for a fee, handle your releases for you.
Whichever route you decide to take, you really should be adding this to your arsenal of SEO weapons that will help you gain an edge over your competition, get more traffic to your site and increase your sales. What is stopping you? Submit a press release today!

Keyword Use - The Right Way and The Wrong Way

Keywords use and keyword density are probably the toughest things for a newbie marketer to fully understand. Part of the reason may be the ever changing search engine algorithms, but for most, it is the idea that if a little is good...then a lot must be better.

Understanding keyword density and how to make the most impact on a web page SEO is not always cut and dry. If you ask many SEO experts, you may well get a variety of answers to just what the keyword density of a page should be. The truth is, because the search engines are not forthright with their guidelines, we are left to judge for ourselves and find the answers through trial and error.

Unfortunately, the "error" side of the trial can be costly as it may result in getting a page de-indexed, never to return. What I can share with you, with certainty, is what you should and should not be doing. Following these tips will make the best use of your keywords and get you the best results.

Follow the leaders. Since we do not have it in writing what is and is not acceptable, we should look to the leaders to determine the best keyword density. Since EzineArticles is considered one of the best, they allow only 2% keyword density, therefore this is what you should aim for in your own web content.

Choose only one main keyword phrase per page. Now this is the one that most newbies or inexperienced SEO people have the most trouble with. Just because you have a list of 10 keywords that you would like to rank for does not mean you should put all of them into every page of your website. If you do, you will get the opposite effect and likely will never rank for any of them. To be most effective you need one per page. So, if you have 10 phrases you need to have 10 different pages, one for each.

By placing them all in one page, you are actually diluting their effectiveness and confusing the search engines because they cannot pick out one significant word amongst the mish-mash of content.

Definitely the wrong way to use keywords:

For example, let's say your website is a site that sells items for people who own dogs. You may have a list of keywords such as: dog lovers gifts, dog owners gifts, gifts for dog lovers, gifts for dog owners, etc. If you were to use all of those phrases within a product description that was typically 100 words in length this would be a very bad idea. Not only would it not give a clear statement to the search engines, you may very well be slapped with the label of keyword stuffing because the words dog and gifts would be appearing at a very high keyword density. Not to mention, the readability for your visitors would be very poor and your site will appear to be low quality in the eyes of the shopper.

The right way to use keywords:
Select one keyword. Place that main phrase in a title heading at the top of the page. Forget all of the others and focus on the one phrase for that webpage. You should include it in your first sentence and in the last sentence. And that is it. No more. If then length of your text is greater than 200 words, you may choose to add it once more somewhere in the middle. Because you have included it in your heading, the search engine already knows it is the main focus of the page. It is not necessary to stuff it in there every hundred words. Just make sure it appears as close to the beginning of the text and as close to the end of the text as possible.

Now just repeat the process with each of your keywords. You will be surprised at how much better your site performs in the search engines when you give them a very clear message of what each individual page is about and you will move up the rankings for each phrase because your pages are now clearly defined and you are using the proper keyword density.
